Conceptualizing the "lady" behind Lady Alhambra

Lady Alhambra is a 15 minute one-person comedy that tells the story of Nila, a Cuban-American vedette and autodidactic spiritualist working at the House of Mambo nightclub sometime in the reimagined 1920s and 1930s, where she conjures the spirit of her recently deceased mother and learns about a life-changing secret and forthcoming revelation. This play is an ambitious attempt to capture a present version of the elegance and despotism inherent to nightlife entertainment of the time period; portray the unpleasantness of dysfunctional rivalries between siblings; transmit the beauty and rawness of Afro-Cuban mysticism; and give rendition to notable Cuban and Cuban-American entertainers whose artistic careers elevated the place of Latinx artists in the entertainment industry. To put it plainly, this play is a reimagined projection of my childhood memories growing up in Havana, Cuba.
